“Birds”

I love all different kinds of birds… I love that they are different shapes and some walk and some fly… they are all different. I got inspired to do this project by my mom, from the TV, from many places… – Kindergarten Student

Project work that reflects the interests of students allows children to investigate topics of interest to them and reach deeper levels of understanding. In this case, a young student, who demonstrated an ongoing interest in many types of birds, showed her understanding using a variety of mediums: written expressions, sharing orally, artful creations, etc. Student-initiated projects create a context for uncovering curriculum expectations, as well as deepening important foundational skills in researching, critical thinking, and communicating.
