Unlike the content free Full Day Early Learning – Kindergarten Program, the Grade One curriculum holds specific curricular objectives that are connected to units of study. The content outlined by the ministry may not always be aligned with the innate interest of students and emerge naturally. Recognizing this challenge, I set out at the beginning of the year to listen carefully and observe closely to the interests of the learners and see how it could connect to our Social Studies and Science curriculums.
I knew the students would develop a relationship with the natural space around them during outdoor learning opportunities and recess. Through listening and observing I began to understand what inspired them – colour. I harnessed this interest in colour to support our study of the projected unit of study – Daily and Seasonal Changes.
